One of the highlights of our monthlong tour of California were the cars. From the vintage Bentley being restored in a Buellton garage, to the caravan of Corvettes zipping down a Palo Alto freeway, to the Pinzgauer offering dirt-road tours at a Lake County winery, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the Golden State’s automobile culture.

It happened again yesterday. We’d just posted another blockbuster story by Michelle Friedman about buying jewelry on a cruise. Within seconds, the site choked up, displaying that familiar “error establishing a database connection” message. “Oh no,” I said, “not another meltdown!”

I’m in a nameless suburb along California’s central coast this morning. This is the view from my room. It doesn’t look like the gateway to excitement, but for you and me, it’s the start of an adventure.
